Our November show is less than a month away and we can’t wait to return to Tulsa. In anticipation, we’ll be introducing you to some of our unique vendors, favorite vendors and a few first-time vendors in the coming weeks. First up is craftsman Steve Coleman and his booth Kaleidoscopes by Coleman.

Five Questions with Steve Coleman

How long have you been making kaleidoscopes and how did you get started?
I have been making kaleidoscopes for about 30 years, and have been making improvements and adjustments over the years.  I got started after reading a magazine article about making scopes and was intrigued with the idea, and also, I wanted something interesting to do with my wood lathe…

How long does it take you to make a standard kaleidoscope?
I can usually complete a scope in one day, but some of the styles take several days.

What is your best-selling item?
My best selling item is the exotic hardwood kaleidoscope.  I will also be bringing some newly designed scopes made of colored pencils.

What do you look forward to most about doing shows?
My favorite part of doing shows is the interaction with the people and hearing what they say as they look in the scopes.  One little girl, upon looking into one of my scopes said, “Mommy! It’s a rainbow in outer space!”

What would you like people to know about your kaleidoscopes?
I use the best quality materials I can find and also enjoy using repurposed materials to make unique items, such as steampunk and industrial style scopes.  Included with purchase of all hardwood scopes is a stand and a gift box.
